How does the gigabytes usage work?

Think of GB as your monthly processing allowance, not as cloud storage. Each Robot in your workflow does one task, and the usage from those tasks is added together.

Most file conversions count the input and output sizes. For example, turning an 800 MB video into a 200 MB video uses about 1 GB.

Lightweight tasks such as importing from or exporting to S3 count only a discounted part of the file size. A few Robots also have a small minimum usage per task.

What are priority slots?

Priority slots limit concurrent processing. Different features require different slot counts per file: `/image/resize` requires 5 and `/video/encode` requires 60. When all slots are busy, new jobs wait in a queue until slots become available again. Slot allowances apply separately per region.

What do I get for one GB?

One GB represents one billion bytes of billable usage. For most Robots that transform files, we add the input and output file sizes. Processing an 800 MB input into a 200 MB output therefore uses 1 GB.

Because file sizes and workflows differ, one GB is not a fixed number of files or operations. It could cover one large conversion or many small ones. Use the usage estimator for a practical workflow estimate, and see the Robot pricing page for the exact usage rules of each Robot.

Will there be any surprises after I sign up?

How can so many different features all be priced with the same metric?

GB gives every workflow a common unit, while each Robot adjusts how much usage counts to reflect the infrastructure it needs.

• Most processing Robots count the combined input and output file sizes.
• Lightweight Robots have built-in discounts. For example, many import and export Robots count only 10% of the bytes they handle, while some Robots are free.
• Resource-intensive Robots can have a minimum charge per operation. This accounts for fixed compute or provider costs even when the input file is very small.

This keeps pricing comparable across image, video, audio, document, storage, and AI workflows without pretending that every operation costs the same amount. Every Robot’s discount and minimum charge is listed on the Robot pricing page.

Is the data volume reset monthly?

Yes. The data limit is reset to the amount of GB included in your plan at the beginning of each month.

What happens if my plan limit is reached?

Community does not include overage. Processing stops at its monthly limit of 5 GB. It resumes when the allowance resets at the beginning of the next month, or when you upgrade. Existing Hobbyist accounts keep their 5 GB monthly cap.

Lite includes 15 GB per month, then charges $2 per additional GB. Pro also includes overage processing. Subject to your account’s spending-limit settings, processing continues after the included usage is depleted and the additional usage is billed at the plan’s overage rate. We also send usage warnings by email so you can upgrade when another plan would be more cost-effective.

Enterprise allowances and overage terms depend on your agreement.

For instance, our Pro plan costs $69 per month and includes 40 GB. Overage is $1.80 per additional GB. If you use 40.8 GB, you pay $69 + 0.8 × $1.80 = $70.44.

Which payment plan do you recommend?

Generally speaking, the more you can commit to using Transloadit, the more affordable it becomes. We recommend starting with the free-forever Community plan and leveling up when the time is right. We’ll contact you when more cost-effective plan upgrades are in sight. You can change payment plans at any time. If your business demands more performance, encoding features or commercial support, choose the Pro plan. For lower-volume workloads needing full-length, unwatermarked outputs, Lite includes 15 GB for $29 per month, then $2 per additional GB, with a 1 GB file size limit. Video Turbo mode is available from Pro upward. If you already know you can commit to 300 GB a month or more, contact us about a Custom plan.

Can I use the Community plan for more than one month?

Absolutely! The Community plan’s 5 GB allowance replenishes every month and remains free forever.

The Community plan is meant as a free trial. Image results are watermarked, while audio and video results are trimmed so trial transcodes stay fast. Paid plans remove these output limits.

The Community plan does not include overage, so processing stops after the 5 GB allowance is used. Lite includes 15 GB per month with overage at $2/GB. Lite and Pro allow billable overage, subject to your account’s spending-limit settings; Enterprise overage terms depend on your agreement.

Why are Community plan files watermarked or trimmed?

The Community plan is our free trial. It remains free to use and includes access to every Robot, but generated results have trial limits:

• Image results include a subtle Transloadit watermark.
• Audio and video results are trimmed instead of watermarked, so free-trial transcodes stay fast.

To remove these limits from your Assemblies, upgrade to a paid plan.

Why doesn’t Transloadit charge by the minute?

Charging by the byte allows us to support any kind of conversion with a single $/GB metric.

Transloadit handles many types of files. Not all of those have a duration (documents, zip files, images, web pages) and the ones that do (audio & video) are not all created equal. If we charged by the minute, we would need separate rates for low-res vs. 4K. That’s already getting quite complex and it would only get worse when new formats come out — 32K anyone?

Instead, usage is based on file sizes flowing through each Robot in an Assembly. Robots that transform a file count both the bytes going in and the bytes coming out, while imports, exports, and similar operations count only their own side. This applies a single unit of measurement to image resizing, document conversion, metadata extraction, video encoding, and workflows that combine them. It also reflects the work more closely than duration alone: encoding one minute of a small standard-definition clip is not equivalent to encoding one minute of high-resolution video, and an image or PDF has no meaningful number of minutes at all.

The raw byte count is not always the billed byte count. Each Robot can apply its own discount factor, including Robots that are free or count only a fraction of their input and output. Imports and exports have their own factors as well. The pricing examples show how those factors combine in representative Assemblies, and the Robot pricing page lists each Robot’s current discount and, where one applies, its minimum charge.

When estimating a workflow, include every Step that reads or produces a file rather than looking only at the original upload. Running a small test Assembly gives you its actual usage before you project production volume. Plans then lower the effective per-GB price for committed monthly usage; processing above the included amount continues at the published overage rate.

We do offer discounts when we can in order to pass on savings. For instance, because 🤖/video/thumbs is very lightweight, it only counts every tenth byte flowing through.

Why am I seeing more GB charged than my input files?

We sum up each Robot's input and output. Depending on the number of Steps you have and how you chain these together (maybe you want to virus scan your media before passing it to encoding & storage Steps).

We found that charging for input & output of each step was the only sensible way to support any kind of file and all possible combinations and workflows, in a sustainable way. That said, we do provide drastic discounts (some bots are either free, or only every tenth byte is counted) in cases where this pricing model would become unattractive.

Is machine-readable pricing available for AI agents?
