# What is an AAF File?

An Advanced Authoring Format file exchanges editable media compositions between production applications. It can preserve timeline structure, metadata, embedded media, and references to external assets.

## How AAF Files work

AAF represents an editable production as a graph of compositions, tracks, clips, transitions, metadata, and media relationships. The package may carry media essence internally or point to files managed outside it, allowing different tradeoffs between portability and package size. In post-production it acts as an interchange layer between creative systems, but successful transfer depends on the subset of effects, identifiers, timecode, and media types both applications understand.
