# What is Cloud Video Encoding?

Cloud video encoding compresses source video into specified output formats, profiles, and quality levels using provider-managed compute resources. Capacity can be allocated without maintaining local encoder hardware.

## How Cloud Video Encoding works

Encoding turns decoded frames and samples into compressed video and audio bitstreams according to choices such as codec, profile, rate control, frame structure, and pixel format. A hosted encoder schedules that compute on managed CPU, GPU, or specialized hardware and writes results to remote storage or a packager. Unlike transcoding, the input need not already be a compressed delivery file. It sits after capture or mezzanine ingest and before packaging, quality control, and publication.
