What is Compositing?

How Compositing works

Digital compositing evaluates a stack or graph of foregrounds, backgrounds, masks, mattes, and effects to calculate final pixels. Alpha and blend operations determine coverage and interaction, while transforms and tracking align elements in space and time. Convincing integration also requires consistent perspective, motion blur, grain, lighting, and color management. The composite is usually created during finishing and then rendered into a master or delivery derivative.

Image software decodes the source into pixels, applies spatial or color operations, and encodes the result. Resize filters, crop coordinates, operation order, and output settings determine both appearance and file size.

Image operations interact with resolution, aspect ratio, alpha, color profiles, orientation, and compression. Test the complete sequence because changing the order of resize, crop, sharpen, and encode operations can change the result.
