What is F4V?

F4V is an Adobe Flash video container based on the ISO base media file format. It commonly carries H.264 video and AAC audio and was supported by later Flash Player versions.

How F4V works

F4V packages tracks in a hierarchy of typed ISO media boxes, making its internal organization closer to MP4 than to the earlier FLV structure. Adobe introduced it for the later Flash delivery stack, where the player interpreted both standard media structures and ecosystem-specific expectations. The container and the compression inside it are separate compatibility questions. During migration, inspection determines whether streams can be rewrapped directly or whether decoding and reencoding are necessary.
