# What is an Interlaced GIF?

An interlaced GIF stores image rows in four passes rather than sequentially. A decoder can therefore show a coarse version of the complete image before enough data arrives to render every row.

## How Interlaced GIFs work

GIF interlacing changes only the order in which a frame’s scanlines enter the compressed image-data stream. Early passes cover the full height sparsely, and later passes fill the gaps, so an incremental decoder can expand known rows into a recognizable preview. The palette, dimensions, transparency rules, and final pixels remain the same as for sequential storage. During optimization, a tool must decode the pass order before cropping, resizing, palette reduction, or animation disposal processing.
