How Transmuxing works

A transmuxer parses one container, extracts its encoded elementary streams, and writes those streams with timing and metadata into another container or segment structure. The compressed pictures and audio samples need not be decoded, making the operation much lighter than a codec conversion. Compatibility is determined by the destination container and playback ecosystem, not merely by filename extensions. It sits in packaging workflows that prepare existing encodes for streaming, download, or device-specific delivery.

A demuxer separates tracks from the container, decoders turn compressed streams into frames or samples, and filters apply spatial or temporal changes. Encoders compress the transformed tracks before a muxer writes the chosen output container.

Video compatibility is the product of codec, container, profile, level, frame rate, color, audio, and subtitles. Validate the complete output on target devices because a playable file on one decoder may fail or look different on another.
