Transloadit is a media processing API for e-commerce catalogs. It can validate supplier and studio files, automate controlled image and video edits, export approved derivatives, and deliver a controlled set of on-demand variants while your catalog system remains the source of truth.

### Video encoding

Transform, resize, and watermark videos or animated GIFs to ensure smooth playback across devices.

### Adaptive streaming

Generate HLS and MPEG-Dash files with manifest and playlist support, providing quality video playback on any network.

### Image optimization

Compress and streamline images while preserving quality, improving page load times and user satisfaction.

### Watermarking

Apply brand logos or text overlays onto images and videos, securing ownership and preserving brand identity.

### File virus scanning

Automatically detect and quarantine malicious content to safeguard your platform against malware attacks.

### File filtering

Route or block files based on customizable rules such as file size, type, or virus scan results to enforce policies.

### File importing

Bring in entire directories from S3, Azure, Dropbox, and more, automating ingestion and freeing local resources.

### Global file delivery

Distribute files across worldwide edge servers, ensuring minimal latency and fast access for end users.

Catalog-media architecture

<span aria-hidden="true" id="four-stages-from-source-asset-to-approved-product-media"></span>

## Four stages from source asset to approved product media

Treat product media as a versioned workflow. A successful Assembly—a completed processing run—is not the same as approval to publish. Across the workflow, establish clear owners, durable identifiers, and recovery paths.

### 1. Ingest and identify

Accept studio uploads, supplier feeds, or imports from controlled storage. Record the product ID, source version, checksum, rights state, and intended destinations.

### 2. Validate the source

Validate detected file properties, dimensions, and orientation against policy. Quarantine or reject unsupported and suspicious inputs before derivatives are produced.

### 3. Produce derivatives

Create named image sizes, modern formats, crop presets, video renditions, video poster frames, or watermarks from one saved [Template](/docs/topics/templates.md) parameterized with [Assembly Variables](/docs/topics/assembly-variables.md).

### 4. Publish and reconcile

Verify outputs and export them to the approved destination. Your commerce stack updates the catalog, manages publication state, and keeps prior versions for rollback.

<span aria-hidden="true" id="why-transloadit-fits-e-commerce-media-workflows"></span>

## Why Transloadit fits e-commerce media workflows

One Transloadit Assembly can accept uploads or import product assets, validate observed file properties, fan out several image and video operations, export the results, and report structured status data. This is useful when the same product master must become controlled outputs for a storefront, marketplace, app, and advertising channel.

### Automate product image edits across a catalog

A saved Template can resize, crop, convert, optimize, and watermark product images, then fan out named sizes and formats from the same validated original. Add file filtering before those steps when a workflow must reject sources that do not match its format, dimensions, or other observed metadata policy.

### Product video encoding and previews

The same workflow can encode product videos, create poster frames or thumbnails, and export image and video results together. The application still decides which rendition belongs to each product and sales channel.

### Smart CDN delivery for product images and videos

Transloadit Smart CDN can import an original from application-controlled storage, run a saved transformation Template on a cache miss, and deliver the selected result through global edge caching. Use asynchronous Assemblies for fixed, approved catalog outputs and Smart CDN for a constrained set of variants whose demand is difficult to predict.

## E-commerce media processing questions

### When is Transloadit a good fit for automated product image editing?

Choose Transloadit when product image edits belong in a repeatable workflow that also needs upload or import, file validation, several output variants, product video processing, or export to application-controlled storage. If the only requirement is URL-driven image resizing for assets already at an origin, a dedicated image CDN can be simpler.

### Is Transloadit a CDN for product images and videos?

Transloadit includes Smart CDN, a transformation and delivery layer for images, videos, documents, and other files. It complements application-controlled object storage; it does not replace a PIM, DAM, storefront, video player, or live-streaming platform.

### Does Smart CDN improve e-commerce image SEO?

Smart CDN can create and cache bounded, right-sized image variants and modern formats for storefront delivery. The commerce application still owns crawlable page markup, intrinsic dimensions, responsive image attributes, alt text, product structured data, canonical URLs, and the editorial decision that an image is appropriate to publish.

### When should a store preprocess media instead of using on-demand delivery?

Preprocess derivatives that must exist before publication, require human approval, or must be exported and retained as immutable catalog outputs. Use on-demand delivery for a bounded set of presentation variants when cold-miss latency is acceptable and demand is difficult to predict. Many commerce systems use both paths.

## Define the ownership boundary

### What Transloadit owns

* File upload or import and server-side processing execution
* Image, video, document, metadata, and export steps
* Structured Assembly status and retryable notifications
* On-demand transformation and [Smart CDN](/services/content-delivery.md) delivery, when enabled

### What the commerce stack still owns

* Product identity, variants, merchandising, pricing, and inventory
* Rights approval, alt text, crop review, and publication state
* Storefront markup, product structured data, analytics, and experimentation
* Deletion policy, rollback, and reconciliation with the PIM or DAM

## So many ways to integrate

![well connected cloud](/assets/images/artwork/202501/cloud.jpg?dpl=dpl_FYHTJv4j9hyBeSQV4ydKhdm3Askj)

Connect a storefront, PIM, DAM, or commerce backend through the REST API or an official SDK. Import originals from supported storage, run saved Templates, export approved derivatives, and write result references back through trusted integration code.

### Bulk imports

Add one of our [import Robots](/services/file-importing.md) to acquire and transcode massive media libraries.

### Handling uploads

We are *the* experts at reliably [handling uploads](/services/handling-uploads.md). We wrote the [protocol](https://tus.io) for it.

### Front-end integration

We integrate with web browsers via our next-gen file uploader [Uppy](https://uppy.io) and SDKs for Android and iOS.

### Back-end integration

Send us batch jobs in any server language using one of our [SDKs](/docs/sdks.md) or directly interfacing with our [REST API](/docs/api.md).

### Pingbacks

Configure a [notify\_url](/docs/topics/webhooks.md) to let your server receive transcoding results JSON in the `transloadit` POST field.

### On-demand

Use our [Smart CDN](/services/content-delivery.md) to adapt files on-demand and stream them directly to your users.
