How 4K Bitrate works

Bitrate is the encoded data rate, while 4K describes spatial dimensions; neither property determines the other. An encoder distributes the available bits according to motion, texture, noise, frame rate, codec efficiency, and rate-control settings. In an adaptive workflow, the 4K rate is the top portion of a rendition ladder and must be balanced against startup time, switching behavior, network capacity, and the quality gain over lower resolutions.

An encoder creates several quality levels, and a packager divides them into aligned segments referenced by a manifest. During playback, the client estimates throughput and buffer health, then requests an appropriate segment from one rendition at a time.
