How 8-Bit Video works

An 8-bit pipeline quantizes each component into a finite set of code values before compression and display. Color model, transfer function, range, and chroma subsampling remain separate choices, so bit depth alone does not specify the signal’s appearance. It fits well in broadly compatible distribution workflows, but repeated transforms or aggressive grading can expose quantization steps that were unobtrusive in the original encoded picture.
