# What is JPEG XR?

JPEG XR is a still-image compression standard derived from HD Photo for continuous-tone imagery. It supports lossy and lossless coding, high bit depths, alpha channels, and high-dynamic-range data.

## How JPEG XR works

The codec grew from Microsoft’s HD Photo design and was standardized for still images with a wider range of sample representations than classic JPEG. Its transform and hierarchical organization support full-frame decoding as well as lower-resolution or region-oriented access. A typical .jxr wrapper uses a TIFF-like image-file-directory structure for pixel format, profiles, and optional descriptive metadata. Adoption is specialized, so archives often retain a validated master and create a more broadly decodable access derivative.
